Ce livre est à lire avant "Windows Internals". Il permet de comprendre ce que fait un Operating System comme Windows à travers les services rendus aux applications écrites en C. Je l'ai lu davantage pour comprendre le fonctionnement de Windows que pour programmer. Le mécanisme de la boucle GetMessage() est mieux expliqué que dans tout autre littérature sur le sujet. Une référence sérieuse pour comprendre Windows.
vous pensiez savoir l'essentiel de la programmation sous windows, vous venez de trouver votre maître, un livre incontournable pour les développeurs sérieux, dommage qu'il ne soit pas traduit en Français car cet ouvrage est incontournable.
I don't know what other reviewers are talking about claiming this is for "advanced" Microsoft developers only. This book describes bread and butter Microsoft development for C and C++ professional developers. Any serious program has to use all kinds of the facilities described in this book just to get anything done that is interesting and worthwhile. The value of this book is that the things you need to know to do this development are presented clearly and systematically. This has been the virtue of all past iterations of this book, and each subsequent edition has been an improvement on the past. The alternative to this book is digging through the SDK, which you can do with the on-line help. THAT I would call boring. But I can't imagine that a truly professional Microsoft C or C++ developer would find this book boring, as one of the reviewers has. I appreciate the fact that it is not full of cute little asides or sarcastic observations. It is a professional presentation addressed to professional developers who needs to know this stuff just to do their jobs or to get through an interview for a new job.
When you want to know how windows works, there are 3 people (outside of Microsoft) to go to: Jeffery Richer, Matt Pietrek and John Robbins. This book deserves a spot on every serious developer's shelf. It covers a lot of under the hood topics that are difficult to find elsewhere.Even though .NET is starting to gain ground, a lot of the low level details of the OS have not changed and a good knowlegde of win32 can never be a bad investment.
Another book you must have.
The title of this book suggested to me that it was the book I needed if I wanted to learn the Windows API. Unfortunetly after struggling through it I've reallized it's targeted to an audience who already has knowledge of programming in the Windows API. I think a better title would have been something like "Tips, techniques, and common shortfalls for the Microsoft Windows Application Programmer." A waste of money on my part since I would need to buy his earlier book, and then by the time I would have mastered the basics that would allow me to move on to this book C# .NET will be wellestablished and although maybe not obsolete, the old Win API will not be needed. So this one is going on my shelf and I doubt I will ever make much use of it. The only reason I don't give it a lower rating is because it does have interesting notable information on Unicode even for me, and were I of the experienced, intended audience, then lots of the other contained information would be very interesting and beneficial from what I can tell.
